How to Stargaze: A Beginner's Guide to Spotting Planets

You don't need a telescope to see five of the solar system's planets. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are all bright enough to spot with the naked eye if you know when and where to look. This guide covers the basics: how to tell a planet from a star, when each one is visible, and what you can expect to see without any equipment.
Planet or Star? How to Tell the Difference
The word "planet" comes from the Greek for "wandering star" -- and that's still the easiest way to identify one. Stars twinkle because their light is a single point being disturbed by Earth's atmosphere; planets appear as small discs (even if your eye can't resolve the shape) and so their light is steadier, with much less twinkling. Planets also move against the background of fixed stars over days and weeks, following a predictable path near the ecliptic -- the line the Sun, Moon, and planets all appear to travel along across the sky.
The Five Naked-Eye Planets
Venus
The brightest planet by far, and often mistaken for a UFO or aircraft light. Venus is only ever visible shortly after sunset (as the "evening star") or shortly before sunrise (as the "morning star"), since it orbits closer to the Sun than Earth does and never strays far from the Sun in our sky.
Jupiter
The second-brightest planet, visible for months at a stretch when it's up. With a good pair of binoculars held steady, you can even spot its four largest moons as tiny points of light lined up beside it.
Mars
Recognizable by its distinct reddish-orange tint. Mars brightens and dims dramatically over a roughly two-year cycle as Earth catches up to and passes it in orbit -- at its brightest ("opposition"), it can rival Jupiter.
Saturn
Fainter and more yellow-toned than Jupiter, Saturn moves slowly through the constellations, spending roughly two and a half years in each one. Its rings aren't visible without a telescope, but even basic binoculars can hint at its non-round shape.
Mercury
The hardest of the five to spot, since it stays very close to the Sun and is only visible for a short window just after sunset or before sunrise, low on the horizon, a few times a year.
Best Conditions for Stargazing
- Get away from city lights. Light pollution is the single biggest obstacle -- even a suburban backyard shows far more than a downtown street.
- Let your eyes adjust. It takes about 20-30 minutes in the dark for your eyes to reach full night sensitivity. Avoid checking your phone screen during this time.
- Check the Moon phase. A full moon washes out fainter objects; a new moon (or no moon in the sky yet) gives you the darkest possible sky.
- Look during twilight for Venus and Mercury. Both are only visible in the window just after sunset or before sunrise -- true darkness actually works against you for these two.
What You'll Need (and What You Won't)
Nothing at all is required to start -- your eyes are enough to find Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn on a clear night. A basic pair of binoculars (7x35 or 10x50 are common beginner specs) will noticeably improve the view, letting you pick out Jupiter's four largest moons or confirm Saturn's non-round shape. A telescope is only necessary if you want to see Saturn's rings clearly or resolve surface detail on Mars and Jupiter.
